600 MINI SPRINTS We are running  TSMA rules as  of: 12/10/2008

Section 1: General

1.1 The Riverside International Speedway will adopt the rules of the National Modified Midget Association (NMMA) “M” Class. The rules set forth herein are designed to provide for the orderly conduct of racing events. These rules shall govern the conditions of all events, and by participating in these events, all participants are deemed to have complied with these rules. These rules are intended as a guide for the conduct of the event and are in no way a guarantee against injury or death to a participant, spectator or official. The Race Director shall be empowered to permit reasonable deviation from any specification that in his opinion does not alter the acceptable requirements, and does not provide an appreciable speed or competitive advantage. The decision of the officials is final. The current NMMA rule book is the final authority.

1.2 Drivers age 14 and up may compete in the 600 Sprint Class.

1.3 All cars must have legible numbers painted in contrasting colors on both sides of car and the nose. Minimum height of numbers is 8" on the nose and nose wing, 10" on each side of the tail and 12" on the wing. Numbers must be separated from advertising so they will be readable.

1.4 No gold or silver leaf or prismatic numbers will be allowed on the cars.

Section 2: Safety

2.1 Seat belts must be securely attached to the car and used at all times. Metal to metal latches only. 5 point seat belts, shoulder harness and sub strap are required. Belt dates must not be over three years old. (Example: Oct 06 may be used in 2007, 2008 and 2009.)

2.2 Arm restraints are mandatory and must be adequately adjusted to keep the drivers hands below the top of the roll cage.

2.3 Helmets must be full head coverage competition type and one of the three latest SNELL approvals.

2.4 All drivers will wear a name brand flame-retardant uniform.

2.5 Neck braces, cage nets and/or head and neck restraints are mandatory.

2.6 SFI gloves are mandatory for safety.

Section 3: Bodies

3.1 All cars must have complete bodies.

3.2 Tail sections must be in place for time trials and all races.

3.3 Body of car must be made of aluminum, metal, fiberglass or high impact plastic.

3.4 No rear view mirrors.

3.5 The only part of the car allowed to be dismantled for driver to enter or exit is a quick release steering wheel hub.

3.6 All mechanically operated devices must be mounted below the driver’s shoulders for safety.

3.7 Wings are mandatory. Minimum 12” tall car number must be displayed on side board. All wings must have a minimum 1/16” radius, no raw edges. No exposed wood or wood products to be used in the wing. The rib and spar within the center section (airfoil) may have wood products. Wings cannot be more than 4 inches below top of roll cage in any wing position. In case of a rollover, car can run the night without a wing if a backup is not available. It is recommended for top wings to be pinned for easy removal in case of driver injury. If a nose wing is used, it must be installed so as not to obstruct the driver’s vision. The nose wing must carry the same car number as the body nose.

3.8 Cars may run maximum twelve (12) square feet top wing. Sideboard max 54” long by max 26” wide.

3.8.1 MEASUREMENT DETAILS:

Left to Right (Side to Side) – Measure with a straight edge on outside of tires.

Front to Back – Measure with a straight edge perpendicular to the ground, in front of front tires and in back of back tires.

If any part of the wing is beyond these measurements, the car is illegal. This will be measured at the scale or a flat surface as the car comes off the track.

3.8.2 Nose Wings: If a nose wing is used, the center section may not exceed 18” x 24” with sideboards no larger than 9” tall x 21” long.

Section 4: Frame

4.1 Car must have bumper extending beyond the front and rear tires.

4.2 Nothing may extend beyond a tangent line from the outside edge of the tires to the bumpers.

4.3 Nothing may extend beyond the outside edge or the tires or wheels, whichever is the widest.

4.4 No sharp corners or design as to hook or damage.

4.5 All cars must be equipped with nerf bars, and they must extend to inside edge of tires, but not beyond the outside of tire.

Section 5: Roll Cage

5.1 Roll cages shall be at least 1 inch .062 wall thickness, or 1 1/8 inch .065 wall thickness, or 1 1/4 inch .065 wall thickness.

5.2 Roll cage shall be made of chromoly steel or equivalent material. The front section of the cage shall be no further back than the steering wheel. Roll cage shall have sufficient fore and aft bracing and strength to support the weight of the car & driver in case of an upset.

5.3 Cage shall have gussets at the intersecting bars to the uprights. Bends must have at least 3 inch radius. No square or pointed corners allowed. Roll cage must be a minimum of 3 inches above the driver’s helmet.

5.4 It is mandatory to install a cross brace behind the seat to support the shoulder harness.

Section 6: Firewalls

6.1 There must be a metal firewall between driver and engine, made of 24 gauge steel or .0625" aluminum.

Section 7: Wheels/Tires

7.1 Any wheel size and tire combination may be used, but tires may not exceed 22 1/2 inches in height.

7.2 Wheels must be held on with 4 or more standard lug nuts or knock-off hubs.

7.3 Tires must have the “NMMA” stamp.

7.4 Minimum durometer reading of 50 before start of feature race.

Section 8: Brakes

8.1 Brakes will be of sufficient strength so as to slide the wheels while the car is in motion at any given time.

Section 9: Suspension

9.1 Tread; Maximum 63 inches outside to outside of rear tires. Minimum 32 inches, center to center of tires.

9.2 Wheelbase; Maximum 70 inches. Minimum 50 inches, center of front axle to center of rear axle.

9.3 Steering; Front wheels must be connected by a solid or tubular tie rod. Rule 1975.3(m).

9.4 All suspension bolts except wheel nuts must be secured by some type of locking device.

9.5 Rear wheel drive only.

9.6 Any shock absorber legal.

Section 10: Clutch/Transmission

10.1 Any type transmission is legal.

10.2 Any car equipped with a shifting mechanism must have this device mounted in the driver’s compartment. Shift levers may be mounted outside the driver’s compartment on opposite side of car from the chain drive.

10.3 Chain guards will be made of .090 inch thick aluminum or equivalent and will run on top of chain from the front of the front sprocket to the center of the rear axle. Driver must not be able to touch the chain or sprockets while sitting in the cockpit.

Section 11: Rear End

11.1 Any read end allowed.

11.2 Any gear ratio allowed.

Section 12: Battery & Electronics

12.1 On and off switches must be on dash, top of the cowl or on steering wheel. On/off switch must be connected and functional.

12.2 No radio communication is allowed with the car or the driver.

12.3 All wet cell batteries mounted in the cockpit must be covered and vented outside the cockpit area.

Section 13: Cooling System

13.1 Any cooling system allowed.

Section 14: Fuel System

14.1 May run NMMA approved gasoline, ethanol or methanol.

14.2 All fuel tanks must be equipped with a one-way check valve designed to prevent the spillage of fuel from the fuel tank vent in the event of a rollover.

Section 15: Engines

15.1 Any multi-cylinder 4 cycle engine larger than 250cc, but not exceeding 619cc.

15.2 Must have cockpit operated electric starter, lever manual clutch in car and on-board battery capable of starting a 619cc engine.

15.3 Must also remain chain-driven off of the original countershaft.

15.4 Any other modifications allowed.

Section 16: Weight

16.1 Minimum car and driver weight 750 lbs.

16.2 Any material used for ballast must be firmly attached as a part of the car's structure. 16.3 No liquid or loose ballast such as water, fuel, oil, sand bags, rocks, log chains etc. allowed.

Section 17: Protest/Claims

17.1 Protest must be submitted to the Race Director or a Track Official within 10 minutes of feature completion (fall of the checkered flag) for the class involved. Car protested has right to counter protest. Only top 5 and on the lead lap can protest.

17.2 Refusal to comply with post race protest will result in automatic disqualification.

17.3 Protest fees: $250 to pull head to check engine displacement. No other engine protests will be observed. If found illegal, the driver submitting the protest will retain the protest fee. If found legal, the protested driver will retain the protest fee.

17.4 RIS will not receive any proceeds of a protest inspection. RIS will not incur any costs for labor or materials associated with teardown for inspections.

17.5 Protest teardowns will be conducted in an area designated by the Race Director. The only participants allowed access to the protested car are: RIS officials, the driver submitting the protest and the driver that was protested and two of his/her mechanics. Teardown procedures will be directed and closely monitored by RIS officials.

17.6 If the engine protest inspection results in the driver being found illegal, the driver will lose points and purse for that night.

17.7 Can OR Can’t rule: Do not try to read between the lines in the rule book. Just because the book doesn’t say you can’t, don’t assume you can. Any modifications not specifically outlined here are at the Tech Departments discretion. All final decisions will be made by the tech Officials. Ask first before you assume something is legal.
